If you have been in a store shopping lately, you will see the racks filled with beautiful colors because somewhere (even if your hometown weather disagrees), it’s time to start thinking about spring! For many Midwestern boutiques, customers are still in their boots, sweaters and hats, while the stores are screaming spring…or at least spring break! So, boutique owners, let’s embrace the fashion world and get a start on top looks to buy for your shoppers’ spring and summer wardrobes.

It’s important to remember that when looking at trends, we have to translate fashion from the runway to everyday life. Some styles that are a hot trend on the runway, are not as easily taken to the street. For instance, a big trend we are seeing is cellophane fabrics and bra tops. That look is a little hard to wear on a Thursday to the grocery store, but it’s what we saw on the New York runways this year. Keep an eye out for these must-haves when going to market in the coming weeks:

Colors that pop

Color trends are big for spring, which we welcome with open arms after a dreary, long winter. Corals, tangerine and peachy pinks were brightening the runway. Pistachio and Biscay Green were the dominating green hues, followed by Butter Yellow and Saffron representing the yellow palette. Of course, don’t forget the Pantone color of the year, which is Classic Blue. For spring, we’ll also see shades of faded denim and navy, along with another classic color: white in every shade. If you want your merchandise to stand out from your competition, take inspiration from the classic highlighter pack and embrace this season’s color trend seen all over the runway for spring: neon.

Power trip

Want to give your customers a power trend? Invest in power suites in various colors and shapes, add a twist by pairing with shorts. Or, if your customers are a little more polished, stay classic and merchandise a white blouse or vest with your suit for a timeless look. No matter what personalization you add, your customers will be on-trend this spring in any type of suiting.

Patterns on repeat

Patterns, polka dots, and florals are huge for 2020. Think bold, strong patterns when buying at trade shows. An easy update to your shoppers’ wardrobes are fun, loud tops, paired with classic skirts or pants for a fresh look for any occasion. When shopping for a shirt, think volume—whether it be puffy sleeves or strong shoulders to make a major statement.

Faux is a go

Leather. Who doesn’t love this classic trend? Your customers can take leather from the boardroom, to cocktail hour with blazers, tops and pants. Anything goes and don’t be afraid to buy leather in one of the hot colors for spring. If your boutique embodies a 70s or vintage vibe, then this is your year! Pair a wide-leg pant with a crochet top to work that boho vibe your

shoppers are craving. If wide leg pants are not for you, a crochet dress in a beautiful shade of blue, green or coral is all you need to freshen up your spring wardrobe.

Most importantly, when your customers are trying on a new, hot trend this season make sure they are comfortable in that trend above all else. Your shoppers trust you as their fashion expert, and you want to be their go-to, they’ll need outfits they’re likely to wear on repeat.
